Biographical Notes
John William Griffin was born on 7 August 1881, the eldest son of John Jackson Griffin and his wife, Harriet Perry née Higgs. John Jackson Griffin was from Portadown, Ireland, while Harriet Perry Higgs was from Aylburton, Gloucestershire. They married in 1873 in New Zealand and had a family of five sons and three daughters. At various times, the family went by the surname of Jackson, both John William and Henry enlisting under this name. Harriet Griffin died in 1894, two months after the birth of her eighth child.
