Biographical Notes
Hugh Miller Macfarlane was born on 28 November 1885 in North Canterbury, the son of John Donald and Margaret Hart (née Gibson) Macfarlane of Hawkswood. He married Prudence Giles on 8 May 1917 at St Mary’s Church, Timaru. Their daughter, Erica Prudence, was born in April 1918 at Timaru, six months after Hugh had embarked for the Front.
Private H. M. Macfarlane returned home in Draft 210, which brought seventy invalided soldiers for Canterbury and the West Coast, due to reach New Zealand in late January 1919. In December the same year he welcomed a second child, Kenneth Ian MacFarlane (Kim) to their family. After the war Hugh returned to sheep farming. A granddaughter noted that: "Hugh had a farm in North Canterbury, which he named Wadi Nimrin - after the site of a NZ camp in Jordan. This was inherited from his father John Macfarlane, when Hawkswood was divided between his sons. But when he returned from WW1, he farmed at Waikora, Waiaorunga, South Canterbury and his brother, Douglas looked after Wadi Nimrin. Later Wadi was farmed by a second cousin, Malcolm Macfarlane who served in the Royal Airforce in World War Two. Hugh and Prue retired to a property they named 'Tranquillity' on the Ruataniwha station, Lake Pukaki."
Hugh's brother, Walter Angus Macfarlane, also served in World War I.
