Biographical Notes

Douglas Appleby was born on 7 February 1891 at Albury, the son of John Thomas and Mary Appleby. As his father was a station master, the family probably moved about the country. Douglas started his schooling at Hornby School, moving from there to Little River School, and later to Riversdale School and Gore Main. Douglas married Donella Brown on 17 December 1917 at Wellington. When he enlisted, Donella was at Main School, Timaru. Sergeant D. Appleby embarked on 8 February 1918. Draft 211 - the troopship “Briton” - with over a thousand men aboard including Lance Corporal D. Appleby, of Timaru, was due at Lyttelton in late January 1919.
