Biographical Notes

Patrick Morgan was the elder son of Irish parents, James and Mary Morgan. Born on 29 September 1884 at Temuka, he was baptised Roman Catholic there on 17 October 1884. Both Patrick and his brother James were listed on the Reserve Rolls. Patrick Morgan of Temuka was drawn in the fifth ballot in 1917 and called up. He appealed on the grounds that his brother was already at the front, his father could not work and his mother was an invalid. His appeal, however, was dismissed. P. Morgan, of Temuka, was in the draft of South Canterbury men who left for Trentham on 20 February 1917. His younger brother, James, was indeed at the front and his elderly parents were residing at Temuka. Patrick died unmarried in 1932 and was buried with his father.
