Biographical Notes
William Joseph Curtin was the sixth son of Irish parents, Michael and Annie (née Dougherty) Curtin. Born on 17 January 1894 at Timaru, he was baptised Roman Catholic there on 21 January. Michael His parents lived in Timaru Waimate and Dunedin, his father working for the railways. Michael Curtin, senior, died in January 1911 at Timaru Hospital, after a very brief illness. Bill was a carpenter, living at Masterton, when he was drawn in the ballot, called up, and enlisted on 20 July 1917. He married Adele Nolan Wilson in 1919.
Two brothers were called up – Francis Michael, who enlisted, and Patrick. William died on 21 June 1975, aged 81 years, and was buried at Waikumete Cemetery with Adele, who had died in 1940. They had two children. In July 1935 his mother was reported to be desperately ill in Timaru. Annie had returned to Timaru some years after her husband’s death and, dying at her daughter’s residence at Pareora in July 1935, was buried with Michael at Timaru. The youngest son had died at Timaru in infancy; daughter Annie died in 1918 while her husband was on service in France; and son Michael died in 1927. .
