Biographical Notes

Leonard John Holland was born on 26 May 1886 at Moorhouse Avenue, Christchurch, the fifth son of Frederick Holland and his first wife, Margaret née Wilson. Margaret died on 8 June 1888 in childbirth, and was buried at Greendale Cemetery. Leonard married Violet Douglas Kidd in 1912 at Timaru. They had a son, Alan John Holland, born on 22 June 1913 at Timaru. He was a farmer, residing in Christchurch, when he was called up in 1918 and enlisted. His brother, Charles Henry Holland, saw service in World War I, as did his half-brother, Alfred Edward Holland. Another brother, Frederick George Holland, served in the South African War. Both Leonard and Frederick George were listed on the Reserve Rolls for World War I. And another half-brother, Cuthbert George Holland, was called up.
