Biographical Notes
Alfred Edward Holland was born on 30 September 1895 at Greendale near Christchurch, the second son of Frederick Holland and his second wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie) née Watson. Perhaps known as Edward, he was educated at Greendale Side School, and for two months in 1906 at Greta Valley School. He was a railway employee in Christchurch, when he enlisted, nominating his mother of 24 Bligh Street, New Brighton, and of Sherwood Downs, Fairlie, as next-of-kin. Casualty List No. 601, published in June 1917, listed Alfred Edward Holland among the wounded. His mother, Mrs E. Holland, was then living at Fairlie.
On his return from the war, he was initially at Hunter with his parents, before going back to Christchurch. His parents were farming at Hunter before retiring to Timaru. Alfred Edward Holland married Susan Blain in 1920. He and Susan are buried in Temuka Cemetery. His parents are buried at Timaru. His brother, Cuthbert George Holland was called up, as was a half-brother, Leonard John Holland, who enlisted; and another half-brother, Charles Henry Holland, saw service in World War I. And his half-brother Frederick George Holland, served in the South African War. Both Leonard and Frederick George were listed on the Reserve Rolls for World War I.
