Biographical Notes

Edward William Kilworth was born on 8 December 1893 at Waimate, the fifth son of George and Jessie (née Hart) Kilworth. He was a baker in Christchurch when he first enlisted on 29 May 1915. He had registered for compulsory military training at Waimate. He was called up in 1917 and again enlisted. Although he had pronounced varicocele, it was “not of the kind to cause rejection” and he was passed fit. Edward married Amy Barrie in 1917. Edward and his four surviving brothers were pall-bearers at the military funeral of his younger brother, Robert Clarence Kilworth at Waimate in December 1937. Both Robert and Frederick had served overseas in World War I. Edward William Kilworth died on 23 June 1981 at Christchurch and was buried with his wife at Bromley Cemetery.
