Biographical Notes
Rodger McNab, the second son of Daniel and Johanna (née McCarthy) McNab (both born in Ireland), was born on 19 December 1889 at Rangitata. He and his siblings were educated at Rangitata Station School. His father died in June 1917. Three brothers were called up in 1917 – Daniel who had undergone a serious operation and was in Geraldine Hospital, his case being adjourned sine die; Hugh was allowed a little more time before departing for camp, where he succumbed to influenza at Featherston in November 1918; and Edward who was farewelled and did get to camp. Rodger was given time to finish the shearing season. He was farming at Rangitata when he enlisted, naming his youngest sister, Alice McNab, as next-of-kin. R. McNab was in quite a large draft of men who went into camp at the beginning of March 1918 as South Canterbury’s quota for the 39th Reinforcements. Before leaving the men were given a brief farewell at the Drill Shed. Rodger married Elsie Edith Hammond on 19 November 1919 at the Methodist Church.
