Biographical Notes
Edward McNab, known as Eddie, was born on 17 February 1893 at Rangitata, the fifth and youngest son of Daniel and Johanna (née McCarthy) McNab, both born in Ireland. He and his siblings were educated at Rangitata Station School. His father died in June 1917. Edward and two brothers were called up in 1917 – Daniel who had undergone a serious operation and was in Geraldine Hospital, his case being adjourned sine die; and Hugh who was allowed a little more time before departing for camp, where he succumbed to influenza at Featherston in November 1918. Another brother, Rodger, was given time to finish the shearing season before embarking for service overseas. On appeal, Edward was allowed till 17 September 1917 to fix up his affairs and help with arranging his father’s affairs. Eddie was farming at Rangitata when he enlisted, naming his mother, Johanna McNab, as next-of-kin. He was farewelled at Rangitata in November 1917.
