Biographical Notes

James George Young was born on 23 June 1895 at Makikihi, the fourth son of William and Mary (née Hogan) Young. He was educated at Hunter and Makikihi schools, in South Canterbury. His father died in 1905 and was buried at Waimate; his mother lived on, a widow, until 1937.

James was a labourer at Oamaru when he enlisted. He married Mary Logan in 1922. James George Young died on 21 January 1965 at Levin, aged 69 years (headstone records 71) and was buried in Tiro Tiro Cemetery at Levin. His oldest brother, Michael Joseph Young, also served in World War I. Pte J. G. Young and Eng M. J. Young were listed in the Waimate Daily Advertiser Roll of honour from February 1917.
