Biographical Notes

Archibald Manning, known as Archie, was born on 19 January 1896 at Timaru, the youngest of the nine sons and two daughters of John Lumley and Devina (née Duff) Manning. His father, a fisherman, drowned on 18 June 1909 at Caroline Bay. Archie was educated at Timaru Main School.

A Timaru boy, writing to his parents on 2 January 1916, mentions that he had met a lot of Timaru boys in Egypt, including Archie Manning. Archie married Rita Iris Taylor in 1922 at Christchurch. He was awarded the MBE.
