Biographical Notes
John Paterson Tavendale, born on 11 June 1882 at Waimate, was the son of James and Jessie Tavendale. At the time of enlisting, John was engaged in farm work at Waihao Forks and named his father as next-of-kin – Jas. Tavendale, Arno, Waimate. J. T. Tavendale, 6/3178, of Waimate, returned to New Zealand per the “Kia Ora”, embarking at Liverpool in March 1919, the draft being due at Lyttelton on 7 May 1919. John died, probably unmarried, on 21 July 1973 at Timaru, aged 91 years, and was cremated at Salisbury Park Crematorium. His youngest brother, William Tavendale, died of wounds in 1915 at Gallipoli. Another brother, David, also served in World War I.
