Biographical Notes
Henry Brittliff was born on 23 April 1888 at Southbridge, Canterbury, the youngest son of Joseph and Charlotte (née Lacey) Britliff, who had come from England to New Zealand in the mid 1870s. Henry’s birth was registerd as Britliff, and he enlisted as Harry Britliff. On enlistment, he nominated his oldest brother, William Brittliff, of Timaru, as next-of –of-kin. Their father had died in 1906 and their mother in 1916. William had married in 1906, and his infant daughter was buried at Timaru in 1910, and his wife in 1945. H. Brittliff, 12969, of Timaru, returned to New Zealand per the “Kia Ora”, embarking at Liverpool in March 1919, the draft being due at Lyttelton on 7 May 1919. Harry died on 11 September 1959 at Ashburton, aged 71 years (as Britliff). Two brothers, Charles and Frederick George, were called up.
