Biographical Notes
Gordon Hill Grant was born on 30 June 1889 at Temuka, the youngest son of James and Nancy (née Crombie) Grant. James and Nancy, both Scottish, moved north toTemuka in the 1880s. Gordon was educated at Temuka School, Although he was recorded as going out to work in 1902 at the age of twelve, he did further his education in Napier. His parents moved to Hawke’s Bay in the early 1900s. Gordon married Elsie Margaret Kaye on 23 February 1913 at Napier. He was a chemist at Napier, listed on the Reserve Roll, when he was drawn in the ballot and enlisted. Two brothers were also listed on the Reserve Rolls.
Gordon died on 8 February 1931 at Racecourse Hospital, Hastings, of injuries suffered at his shop in the Napier earthquake. His wife, mother and brother William were at Hastings at the time. “Mr Grant was a highly respected citizen of Hastings, and was a most successful and popular business man.” [Temuka Leader, 10 February 1931].
