Biographical Notes

William Arthur Ernest Tiffen, who was born on 30 December 1895 at Makikihi, was the son of James and Martha (née Tregenza) Tiffen. His first year of schooling was at Waimataitai, followed by Makikihi and Otaio schools. William married Gladys Victoria Joyce at Waimate on 3 January 1917, just six weeks before he left for the Front.

Casualty List No. 702, issued in late October 1917, named several South Canterbury men who had been wounded, among them William A. E. Tiffen, of Makikihi. Gladys and William both died in 1949 within six months of each other.
