Charles Hilton Ingley was born on 30 May 1891 at Shannon, the son of James and Margaret (née Yule) Ingley. He was baptised in 1893 at Foxton. A shepherd at St Andrews, Canterbury, he named his mother, Mrs M. Ingley, Palmerston North, as next-of-kin. His father had died in 1903. C. H. Ingley left for Trentham on 18 October 1915 with South Canterbury’s quota for the Ninth Reinforcements. Charles Hilton Ingley, a soldier, married Amy Maud Stone, on 20 February 1917 at St Andrew’s Church, Enfield, London, England. Their first child was born in England. Charles died on 28 July 1976 in Auckland, and was cremated at Purewa, his ashes being interred in the Old Papatoetoe Cemetery.
