Biographical Notes
Martin Joseph Hogan, born on 12 December 1893 at Waimate, was the fourth son and the seventh of the fourteen children born to Martin and Mary (née Cleaves) Hogan. A farm hand for P. Elworthy at Gordons Valley, Timaru, he named his mother, Mrs Mary Hogan, Norton Reserve, Waimate, as next-of-kin. M. J. Hogan left for Trentham on 18 October 1915 with South Canterbury’s quota for the Ninth Reinforcements. He married MaryPauline Vaughan in 1924. Martin Joseph Hogan died on 1 December 1973 at Gisborne, just before his 80th birthday, and was buried in Taruheru Cemetery, Gisborne.
Five Hogan brothers enlisted for in World War I - Henry Joseph, Michael, Martin Joseph and John Joseph who all served overseas, and William Francis whose service was at home.
