Biographical Notes
Daniel Casey was born on 9 May 1888 at Balfour, the second son of Patrick and Ellen Casey. His father died 1897 and Ellen married William Groves in 1899. Daniel, a blacksmith, was residing at St Andrews when he left for Trentham on 18 October 1915 with South Canterbury’s quota for the Ninth Reinforcements. He nominated his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs William Groves, Balfour, athouth the nominal roll gives Mrs A. Casey, Loburn, Rangiora, probably his sister-in-law.
Corporal Daniel Casey, 7/1982, returned home with Draft No. 242 per “Kia Ora”, due at Lyttelton on 7 May 1919. He died on 29 December 1961, aged 73years, and is buried in Timaru Cemetery. The Services plaque attached to his grave carried the service number, rank and unit of Daniel Casey, 40297, who died in 1966 aged 86 years and is buried in Matamata. Daniel’s oldest brother, William Casey, also a blacksmith and a married man with two children, also served in World War I, and a younger brother, Patrick Casey was killed in action in Belgium in October 1917, at which time Daniel was in France.
