Biographical Notes

Cyril George Scales was born on 5 June 1891 at Christchurch, the second son of Walter Scales and his first wife, Georgina Heslope née Girle. He was educated at several schools in the South Island – Prebbleton, George Street Dunedin, Ashburton, Timaru Main, Christchurch Normal, accompanying different parents it appears. Walter and Georgona divorced in 1895, and Walter advertised that he would not be responsible for his wife’s debts. Walter was living at Timaru when Cyril entered Timaru Main School.

Walter married secondly, in 1898, Edith Hart. They had two daughters, the younger, Saide Ellen Scales marrying Gordon Roy Harris of Timaru in 1931, who served in orld War I, and the older, Lynda Ann Scales marrying Frank Joseph Cook of Timaru in 1929. Frank died in 1942 while serving in the Western Desert, leaving his widow and two young children.

On his return from the war, Cyril lived with his father and step-mother and in 1928 with his half-sister Sadie. He married Mabel Lindsay in 1928. After Walter’s death in 1930, Edith lived in Timaru near her two daughters.

Cyril’s older brother who served with the Australian forces in World War I as Gilbert Rosewall Burt, initially named as his next-of-kin his father Mr Walter Burt, of Christchurch, and after his marriage in 1916, his wife, Elsa Antonia Burt. Cyril George Scales, a war pensioner, died on 2 April 1950 and is buried in the Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Christchurch.
