Biographical Notes
George Howe was born on 27 October 1889 at Oamaru, the fifth son of Thomas and Mercy (née Wenman) Howe. He was educated at Maerewhenua and Oamaru South schools. George was wounded and admitted to hospital on 11 January 1918. His was reported as a severe case. He married Adeline Marion Lowry in 1920 at Chalmers Church, Timaru. George Howe died on 17 May 1988, at the grand age of 98 years, and is buried in the Timaru Cemetery. His older brother, Alfred Howe, was killed in action in France in 1918, and another brother, Charles, also served in World War I. Both Charles and George nominated their sister Lilian (Lily) Howe as next-of-kin.
