Biographical Notes

James Alfred Edwin Young was born on 17 February 1894 at Naseby, Central Otago, the son of James and Mary (née Reed) Young. His father had died in 1912. James was a shoeing smith at Cave when he enlisted, leaving by the train from Fairlie on 12 August 1914 with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles men from Fairlie. He married Zelda Elizabeth McLeod in 1922 in Auckland. ,
