Biographical Notes
Seaforth Simpson Mackenzie was born on 9 April 1883 at Timaru, the son of Eneas (Aeneas) and Jeanie Hogg (née Purvis) Mackenzie. He was educated at Timaru Main School and High School. In 1905 he was a solicitor in Wellington. He married Joyce Delbridge on 4 May 1912 at the Presbyterian Manse, Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. When Joyce petitioned for divorce in 1937, they had five children living (3 sons and 2 daughters). Lieutenant-Colonel Seaforth Simpson joined the A.N. & M.E.F. of the Australian Imperial Force on 16 March 1915. He had served in the Cadet Corps. His nominated next-of-kin was his wife – Joyce MacKenzie, “Maglyn”, Wallace Grove, Middle Brighton, Victoria, and “Truro”, Roslyn Street, Middle Brighton. MacKenzie appeared in court in 1936, facing major charges. He was released from prison in 1940. He married secondly, Mary Elizabeth Hanna in 1944. Seaforth Simpson MacKenzie died on 20 October 1955, aged 72 years, survived by his second wife and his five children of his first marriage. More detail in Cenotaph Database.
