Biographical Notes
George Lund was born at Pleasant Point near Timaru. He enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 4 February 1915 at Liverpool, New South Wales, aged 34 years 3 months. A blacksmith and single, he nominated his father as next-of-kin – Walter Lund, Pleasant Point, Timaru, NZ. George stated that he had served for 8 months in the Boer War with the South African Light Horse and been discharged. On 17 March 1915 George Lund deserted. A warrant issued in this regard was withdrawn on 20 January 1919.
Was George in fact, Peter George Lund, born in 1893, a brother of Frederick, Walter and James who all served with the New Zealand Forces? Two brothers did serve in the South African War - Frederick Valdermar Lund and Viggo John Lund (as John).
Peter George Lund was born on 20 May 1893 at Timaru and baptised (as James George) on 5 September 1893 at St Alban’s Anglican Church, Pleasant Point, the son of Christian Valdemar (Walter) and Emma Lund. He was enrolled at school (Pleasant Point) as George and he died as George Peter Lund (Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Christchurch, 1965). George Lund, a carpenter of Pleasant, was called up in 1917.
