Biographical Notes

Edgar Jabez Lukey, born in 12 November 1881 at Timaru and baptised on 21 May 1882 at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, was the youngest son of Jabez and Mary (née Lloyd) Lukey. He was educated at Christchurch Normal and Christchurch East schools. By 1909 he was resident in Victoria, Australia. Edgar married Suporah Ruby Pedersen in 1912 in Victoria, Australia.

A veterinary surgeon, he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 31 July 1917, aged 35 years 8 months. He named his wife as next-of-kin – Ruby Suporah Lukey, Warra Road, Kooyong, Victoria. He had previously served as Captain in the A.A.V.C. (Transport 1916) and as a Lieutenant in the Imperial A.V.C., until his contract expired. He served as a captain of the 1st Veterinary Regiment. His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour of the University Veterinary School of the University of Melbourne – Captain Edgar Jabez Lukey, Army Veterinary Corps (31 July, 1917 to 15 May, 1919), served with the Sea Transport Service and in the British Army Veterinary Hospital in Egypt.

Edgar, a veterinarian, and Ruby spent some time in New Zealand in the 1920s-1930s. He died on 19 June 1958 at Murrumbeena, Victoria, Australia, a retired veterinary surgeon. His brother, Frederick Alexander Lukey also served with the Australian Forces in World War I.
