Frederick Glew, known as Fred, was born Frederick Glue on 13 February 1882 at Timaru, the son of Walter and Mary Ann Ellis (née Mason) Glue. Walter and Mary Ann had married in New Zealand and had a son Walter born at Timaru in 1880. By 1886 they had gone to Victoria, Australia, where more children were born. Fred had adopted the spelling Glew before he married, the only member of the family to do so. Fred married Winifred Ruth Higgs in 1908 in Victoria, Australia. Frederick Glew enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces onnf 27 October 1916 at Melbourne, aged 32 years 8 months. A confectioner living at Northcote, he nominated his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs Winifred Glew, Raleigh Street, Northcote, Victoria. Private Glew embarked per the “Medic” on 16 December 1916 with the 58th Battalion of the 8th Reinforcement.
Fred resumed his occupation as a confectioner after the war. After Winifred’s death in 1947, he married Lizzie Ethel. He died in 1966 at Hawthorn, Victoria. His son, Robert Frederick Samuel Glew, served in World War II.
