Biographical Notes
George Henry Gladwin, born on 20 September 1889 at Washdyke, Timaru, and baptised on 17 November at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, was the son of Thomas James and Helen (Eleanor, née Smitt) Louisa Gladwin. He was educated at Washdyke School. His father died suddenly at Timaru Hospital in May 1910, while undergoing an operation. George Henry Gladwin, his son, “identified the body lying in the Hospital Morgue as that of his father.” George was still at Washdyke in 1911.
George Henry Gladwin enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 4 November 1915 at National Park, New South Wales. He was 26 years old, married, and a soldier who had served 3½ yrs as Storeman Corporal at Albury for the 17th Battalion. George had married Agnes Mary O’Connell in 1914 at Balmain South, New South Wales. He died in 1973, his death registered at Liverpool, New South Wales. One of his brothers, Alfred Edward Gladwin, was called up for service in 1918.
