Biographical Notes

Hugh Dale, 2339, was 39 years old, a driver, and single, when he enlisted on 17 September 1914 at Marrickville, New South Wales. He had served for 8 years with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. Discharged on 11 August 1917, he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Sergeant Hugh Dale died on 24 November 1945, aged 65 years, and was buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Rookwood, New South Wales. His grave is marked with a military headstone, which bears the inscription – “Oh for the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is still.” The death registration names his parents as Hugh and Eliza.
