Biographical Notes
James Gibson Calvert was born on 22 August 1884 at Timaru, the second son of Robert and Annie (née Gibson) Calvert. He was educated at Timaru Main School. He married Margaret Mary O’Neill on 11 April 1915 in Queensland, Australia. On enlisting in Queensland on 29 August 1916, James stated that he had served 3 years with the Infantry in New Zealand when his time expired. He nominated his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs Margaret Mary Calvert, Merther Road, New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland. He was an accountant with one child – Kathleen Marie Calvert, born on 5 November 1915. James featured in the Victoria, Australia, Police Gazette of 18 January 1917, for desertion from H.M. Service. A private, 33 years old, born in New Zealand, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with dark complexion, brown hair and blue eyes, he had deserted from Seymour Camp on 11 December 1916. Post war, James worked as a poultry farmer. His brother Robert Stanley Lawson Calvert (known as Lawson) was killed in action in 1915 at Gallipoli. James died on 25 April 1936 at Campbelltown, New South Wales. He was buried in St Peter’s Anglican Church Cemetery at Campbelltown. His daughter Kathleen Marie Vaughan is buried with him.
