Biographical Notes
William Boyd, born at Timaru, enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 1 March 1916 at Melbourne, Victoria. He was 38 years 10 months old, a miner, and single. His nominated next-of-kin was his mother – Mrs Annie Boyd, High Street, Timaru, New Zealand, his father being deceased. His address was 15 Cicel Street, Williamstown, Victoria. This may be William Norman Boyd, known as Willie, the first-born of Robert and Elizabeth (née Jackson) Boyd. William was born on 18 May 1880 at Timaru and baptised on 16 February 1881 at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru. He was educated at Timaru South and Timaru Main schools and privately. His father, Robert, who was a member of the Wharf Labourers Union and a gunner in the Naval Artillery, died suddenly in October 1890. His mother, though named Elizabeth, did live on High street, Timaru, until her death in 1924, her brother-in-law, William Boyd, probably with her. When William, senior, died in 1919 from work injuries, James Boyd, his nephew and Elizabeth’s younger son, spoke at the inquest. Annie Beatrice Boyd, a daughter of Robert and Elizabeth, and sister of William junior, died at home in 1909, aged 25 years, and a second daughter, Margaret Hilda, died also at home, in 1913, aged 27 years. William Boyd married Alice Pateman in 1901 in New Zealand. William and Alice had a son born late in 1901 at Christchurch. They divorced in 1912 at Christchurch. Their son moved frequently around Christchurch schools (parent – Willaim or W. Boyd) and Timaru South School under the guardianship of Elizabeth Boyd. On one occasion the Christchurch school’s address for William was, indeed, the address at which he was living in 1905. William was, moreover, a stableman at this time, a similar field of work as his brother James.
