Biographical Notes
Margaret Lizzie Bilton, born on 13 December 1867 and baptised on 5 January 1868 at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, was the third daughter of John and Elizabeth (née Inwood) Bilton. John Bilton died in 1894 and Elizabeth in 1900, both buried in Timaru Cemetery. She was educated privately and at Timaru Main School, leaving at sixteen for home. She was at Timaru in 1893. Margaret trained as a nurse, and wrote in detail of her experiences with the Back-Blocks District Nursing scheme. Come March 1915 and she left for England to offer her services in the war effort with Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Reserve. She returned home after four years of service. Margaret died on 21 October 1934 at Auckland, aged 66 years. She was cremated at Waikumete; there is a memorial over her parents’ grave at the Timaru Cemetery. Two brothers, Francis and Arthur, served with the Australian Forces in World War I.
