Biographical Notes

Samuel Joseph Dowthwaite was the son of Elizabeth Louisa (Lizzie, née Skevington) Dowthwaite. He was educated at Waimate District High School and Waihaorunga School, having two periods off with sickness. Lance Corporal S. J. Dowthwaite returned to New Zealand from Egypt per the troopship “Ellenga”, embarking at Suez on 23 July 1919 and arriving in late August. His brother Thomas William Dowthwaite also served in World War I. Samuel married Susan Annie Eathorne in 1920.
