Biographical Notes
William Henry Oliver was the son of John and Annie Nancy (née Trebilock) Oliver, of Cornwall, England. William married Ethel Amelia Hosking in 1917 at Truro, Cornwall. One of their sons, William Hosking Oliver, led the development of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.
It appears that William had spent time in the Timaru area. A number of Methodists from Cornwall seemed to gravitate to Timaru in the early 1900s. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of William Henry Oliver.
