Biographical Notes

Hugh Sitherwood Saunderson was the second son of Joseph Sitherwood and Annie Jane (née Hobson) Saunderson. Joseph and Annie were from County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Born in Victoria, Australia, Hugh was educated at Kaikorai School, Dunedin, and Oamaru South School. An indent clerk, he attended Dunedin Technical Classes as a paying student in 1908. After his father’s death in 1904, his mother married Charles Trevor MacGoun in 1906. In 1914 Hugh was living in Timaru with his mother and step-father. Hugh was called up in 1917. He had, however, already embarked. He nominated his mother as next-of-kin, but she died in 1917 in Wellington. He married Margaret Miller Lochhead in 1923. His brother, Hector Hobson Saunderson also served in World War I. Both Hugh and Hector are remembered in the Timaru Methodist Church Memorial Book. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names were those of Hugh Sitherwood Saunderson and Hector Hobson Saunderson.
