Biographical Notes
Karl Hugo Vogeler was the only son of Carl George and Minnie Beatrice (née Dale) Vogeler. He was educated at Timaru Main School, gaining awards there, including a scholarship for secondary school, and also at the Methodist Sunday School. He participated in football and hockey, and gave a mouth organ solo at a concert in 1909.
Karl assumed the name of Charles Hugh Dale, probably because of his German ancestry, and served with the Merchant Navy. That became his name for the rest of his life. The Mercantile Marine Ribbon and the British Medal Ribbon were issued on 27 August 1919 at Newport, to Charles Hugh Dale, born 1890, Timaru, NZ. A marine engineer, residing in Liverpool and aged 29 years, Charles Hugh Dale was initiated into the Pembroke Lodge, Liverpool, on 2 January 1920. In 1919 in England, he married Robina Rae Robinson, who was a very capable pianist and organist and played for concerts in aid of church funds. Robina’s parents who came to New Zealand are buried atTimaru.
The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of Karl Hugh Vogeler.
