Biographical Notes
Edwin Claude Hayes was the son of Alpheus and Anna Keziah (née Groves) Hayes. He married Alice Middleton on 27 December 1911 at Waimate. They had two daughters – Helen born on 15 September 1912 at Timaru and Margaret Anne born on 27 October 1913 at Waimate. Capt. E. C. Hayes returned home with Draft 191 of invalided soldiers by the “Remuera”, embarking at Liverpool on 7 September 1918 and arriving on 23 October. His brother John Wesley Hayes was called up.
