Biographical Notes
Peter Thoumine was at least the fourth generation Thoumine named Peter (Pierre). His grandfather had come from Guernsey, Channel Islands, to New Zealand and married in 1862 at Timaru. He was accidentally shot in June 1869 while pig-hunting at Otaio Station. Peter (born 1885) was the eldest son of Peter and Louisa (née Bryan) Thoumine. Born on 29 November 1885 at Temuka, he was educated at Waimataitai School, Timaru, Temuka School, then Carterton and Masterton schools after the family moved north in late 1896. Peter married Gladys Leah Good on 11 September 1914 at Timaru. Their son, Trevor Stanley Thoumine was born on 6 June 1916 at Kaponga. A daughter who was born post war, died at seven years of age. His brother Lawrence married Eva Good, a sister of Gladys. Peter was a cheese maker at Kaponga when he was drawn in the ballot and called up, enlisting 8 June 1918 at Hawera. He was widowed in 1923. Three of his brothers – Lawrence Cecil Thoumine (Cecil), David Edward Thoumine and Leonard Stuart Thoumine – served in World War I, David being killed in action in 1916 at the Somme. His cousin, Francis Cecil Rogers, also served, and Arthur David Rogers enlisted; another cousin, Horace James Prattley, was killed in action in 1916 (the same day as David Thoumine) at the Somme. Both his parents died at Kaponga, Louisa in 1909 and Peter in 1927, when he was remembered for his time at Temuka and Timaru.
