Biographical Notes
Lawrence Cecil Thoumine, known as Cecil, was the second son of Peter and Louisa (née Bryan) Thoumine. His grandfather (Peter Thoumine) had come from Guernsey, Channel Islands, to New Zealand and married in 1862 at Timaru. He was accidentally shot in June 1869 while pig-hunting at Otaio Station. Born on 21 October 1889 at Timaru, he was educated at Waimataitai School, Timaru, Temuka School, then Carterton and Masterton schools after the family moved north in late 1896. Lawrence married Eva Myrtle Good in 1919 at Timaru. Eva died in 1928, leaving three little children; and Lawrence married Isabel Margaret Gallie in 1932, by whom he had five children. His brother Peter had married Gladys Good, a sister of Eva. Two of his brothers – David Edward Thoumine and Leonard Stuart Thoumine – served in World War I, David being killed in action in 1916 at the Somme; and his oldest brother, Peter, enlisted in 1918. His cousin, Francis Cecil Rogers, also served, and Arthur David Rogers enlisted; another cousin, Horace James Prattley, was killed in action in 1916 (the same day as David Thoumine) at the Somme. Both his parents died at Kaponga, Louisa in 1909 and Peter in 1927, when he was remembered for his time at Temuka and Timaru.
