Biographical Notes
Charles Howe was the fourth son of Thomas and Mercy (née Wenman) Howe. He was educated at Maerwhenua and Oamaru south schools. Private Charles Howe was reported wounded, by the newspaper of July 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and had the left leg amputated above the knee. He suffered permanent disability. His brother Alfred was killed in action in 1918 in France, and his brother George, a coach painter at Timaru, was called up.
