Biographical Notes

Harold Rugg was the son of Henry Hodson and Catherine (Cristhiana, née Finlayson) Rugg. In 1871 he was at home with his family in London, a medical student. He married Ellen Adeline Pinn in 1872 in London. Harold and ellen had five sons. Through 1881, 1891 and 1901, they lived at Burton upon Trend, Staffordshire, where Harold practised medicine. In 1911 Ellen was in London, recorded as 'wife' and 'married'. Ellen died on 22 March 1933 at Croydon, Surrey. But meanwhile Harold had been to New Zealand. He and his wife Mary were living at Temuka from about 1909 (when he was registered as medical practitioner in New Zealand). While there he enlisted with the New Zealand Forces for war service. His file records that he married Mary Boyer on 5 October 1904 in England (though no registration has yet been identified). Mrs Mary Rugg was his nominated next-of-kin. Probate for both Harold and Ellen was granted to sons. It was in February 1918 that Mrs Rugg went to Dunedin to meet Dr Rugg on his return from Egypt. His eldest son, Herbert Stanley Rugg, served in the South African War, and his fourth son, Godfrey Fausett Rugg, followed a military career. In 1939 retired surgeon, Harold Rugg was living at the Ivanhoe Hotel in London.
