Biographical Notes
William Henry McQuarters was the first-born of the six children of Joseph and Jane (née Hamilton) McQuarters. He was baptized on 16 February 1862 at St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester. William was at home with his family at Manchester in 1871. His mother died on 8 January 1875. Twenty-one year old William was issued his Masters and Mates certificate on 8 December 1883 at Liverpool. William married Edith Florence Elliot in 1888 in New Zealand, and had a family, including his two sons who served in both World War I and World War II. William (senior) farmed with these two sons at Darling Downs, Cave. There too, was William's elderly father, Joseph McQuarters. Edith died in 1899 and William afterwards had more children with Elizabeth Jennings Bradford. William's home at enlistment (5 August 1918) was Darling Downs, Cave, South Canterbury. Named in his file are Ruby years born at Waitoa, Jack 9 years born at Wanganui, Elizabeth 13 years born at Wanganui, and Timi Kara 15 years born at Wanganui, also 7 other children over 16.
