Biographical Notes

Robert Alexander Johnston Bagshaw was the son of Robert Hunter Jessieman Bagshaw, from Dundee, Scotland, and his wife, Margaret Johnston, from the Shetland Islands. Young Robert was educated at Kaikorai School and Otago Boys' High School. He married Marguerite Augusta Brophy in 1907 at Dunedin. Late in 1917 he was drawn in the Second Ballot for Second Division Class A drafts.When he enlisted, he was a clerk for Dalgety & Co, Timaru, having started with Dalgety & Co on leaving school. While in Timaru he became a member of the Lodge of St John. In 191 Robert and Marguerite moved to Christchurch.
