John Richard Bowen Hogg Dennis was the son of James and Elizabeth (née Dennis) Mair. His father died in 1908, his mother in 1916, and they are buried at Timaru. John married Annie Jane Jacquiery on 22 October 1917 at St Mary's, Timaru. They had a daughter, John was a clerk for the Defence Department at Timaru when he was called up and enlisted. Jacqualine Fanny Elizabeth born in 1918. John married secondly, in 1932, to Lillian Margaret MacLay who died in 1949.
