Biographical Notes

Arthur John Henry Lange was the seventh child of John Andrew (Johan Andreas) Lange, of Sweden, and Fanny née Kortegast. His father died in 1886 at Hokitika, leaving Fanny with five or six young children. In 1889 Fanny married Carl Harry Thomas Schultheis. Carl died in 1896 and Fanny herself, died in 1913 at Christchurch. Arthur was educated at Greymouth and West Christchurch schools. He was a billiard saloon keeper at Timaru when he was called up. On 25 June 1917, he left with men from the South Canterbury military district for camp. Arthur married Jessie McKenzie Caldwell in 1919.
