William Coll was the youngest son of James and Catherine (Katie, Kitty, née Hamilton) Coll. He was educated at Kakahu Bush, Fairlie and Allandale schools. Private W. Coll was wounded on 1 October 1918. William Coll was received a presentation form the Ashwick Flat Patriotic Entertainments Committee on his return from the Front. His brother Daniel was killed in action in 1918, and brother James also served in World War I. James and Daniel were serving overseas when their father died in April 1917.
