Biographical Notes

Arthur Gordon Knowles was the fourth son of George Du Rose Knowles and Charlotte Knowles née Taylor. Along with his siblings, Arthur was educated at Waimataitai School. He married Martha Helen Belcher in 1936 in New Zealand. Ellen, as she was known, died in 1965 and is buried in the Timaru Cemetery. Arthur's name is inscribed on the headstone. His brother Frederick Oswin Knowles also served in World War I, and their youngest brother, Percy Timaru Knowles, was called up.
