Biographical Notes

Robert Page McKinlay was the only child of Archibald McKinlay and Margaret née Page. In 1871, one year old Robert was at Pathhead, Fifeshire, Scotland with his mother and maternal grandparents. Margaret Page married Alexander Frew in 1876 in New Zealand. They had no children. Mr Frew was later the mayor of Temuka. Margaret died in 1923 at the Timaru Hospital. Robert was educated at Temuka School from 1883. R. McKinlay embarked from Liverpool on 16 November 1917 by the “Ruahine” and arrived back in New Zealand on 6 January 1918. He was discharged on 16 November 1917, no longer physically fit for War Service, in consequence of being overage. Robert married Helena May Northover (Lena) in 1922. Lena died in 1931, and Robert married secondly in 1952, to Alice Hopetoun Thompson.
