Biographical Notes
John Bowman was the son of Joseph and Hannah Bowman. His father was born in Cumberland, England, about 1838. John had twin sisters, Elizabeth Rose and Isabella, born in 1875 at Timaru. John and his sisters were all christened on 2 August 1891 at St Mary's Church, Timaru. They were educated at Timaru Main School. Their father, Joseph, left his Timaru home on 29 April 1893 and was not seen again. In September following, a human foot was found on the beach near the freezing works. Mrs Bowman recognised the sock covering the foot as her own home knitted work and as worn by her husband when he went missing. It was feared that Mr Bowman would commit suicide, since his son (John) had been arrested on a poisoning charge. John was subsequently, however, found not guilty and was discharged. Mrs Bowman died in February 1911, and her daughter Rose is buried with her in the Timaru Cemetery. J. Bowman embarked from Liverpool on 16 November 1917 by the “Ruahine” and arrived back in New Zealand on 6 January 1918. John married Annie Duff in 1925.
