Biographical Notes
John William Lewis was the elder son of William and Mary Lewis. He was at home with his family at Bilton, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, in 891 and 1901. In 1901 John was an apprentice plumber. He married Sarah Maud Williams on 25 December 1907 at Neslon, New Zealand. He adopted Beatrice Mary (Daisy) Williams, born on 17 August 1904 at Temuka. He and Sarah had two more children - William Edwin Walter Lewis born on 3 November 1908 at Nelson, and John Walter Lewis born on 5 June 1910 at Nelson. All three children attended Temuka School, the two boys transferring to Rotorua in April 1919. Draft 217, the “Zealandic”, left for New Zealand on 18 January 1919 and was due in Wellington on 28 February, carrying over 1000 men and nurses, including j. W. Lewis, of Temuka.
