Biographical Notes
Ernest Garnet Butler was the son (maybe adopted) of James and Susan (née Daniels) Butler. James and Susan who had married in 1876 in England, came to New Zealand in 1881 with James' brother Henry and his family. Trooper E. G. Butler was among the recruits for the Tenth Reinforcements who were despatched from the South Canterbury district in mid November 1915 for camp at Trentham. Susan Butler died in 1920, aged 70 years, at Invercargil, her funeral leaving from the home of her niece Lily Shaw née Butler. James Butler probably died in January 1925, aged 71 years, at Timaru and was buried in the Timaru Cemetery. Ernest married Athol Alice Hoskin in 1923 at St Mary's, Timaru.
